Hey Friends!
Welcome to debatably the best time of the year, fall! The season of ideal temps for outdoor sports, cozy sweaters, hot tea, boots and, of course, the annual pumpkin overload. With September bringing the lovely season of fall it also brings a new Happy Helmets. This month we’re ecstatic to be supported by Smith! The helmets that Smith generously donated left individuals in need at Bicycle Collective absolutely elated.
If you haven’t had a chance, checkout our new Save A Brain Safe Space! A forum for discussions, questions and support around head injuries of any kind. You may go by your name, nickname, or remain anonymous when participating in the forum - whatever you are the most comfortable with! This is a safe space that we created for traumatic brain injury individuals, caregivers and anyone looking to learn more. https://www.saveabrainsafespace.com/
Big Thanks To Smith
“In 1965 Dr. Bob Smith, orthodontist and original ski bum, developed the first sealed thermal lens and breathable vent foam. He hand builds goggles in his garage and sells them out of his van on weekend ski trips in Utah and Colorado.” In 1969 Smith was able to start manufacturing out of Colorado but just a few years later Smith moved production to Ketchum ID, where HQ is still located today. In 2009 they launched the world’s largest eco-friendly sunglass collection, the “protect what we love” ethos of using biobased or recycled materials in all product categories was a major milestone.
Smith has always been one of the leading players in optics and helmets, across a multitude of different action sports. Smith is one of the very few companies that has put Koroyd in their bike helmets as well as the option for Koroyd combined with MIPS (they have these options in snow helmets too). They even recently came out with their “express” helmet for bike commuters that is equipped with MIPS and a built-in light on the back to make you more visible to cars at night/ early morning. We’re over the moon to have the support of such a forward thinking company focused on comfort, innovation, functionality and safety.

Our August Helmet Recipients
“The Salt Lake City shop is the flagship location of the Bicycle Collective. Founded in 2002, the Collective was born when a small group of enthusiastic bicycle users put to the test ideas that appeared to be complementary realities: that bicycles are a sustainable form of urban transportation and people just need a little encouragement to choose to ride; and the fact that there are bicycles sitting unused in garages and backyards throughout the Wasatch front that could be refurbished and put to use by someone in need.
Starting from such a simple idea, the Collective has grown from a small working board of directors in a rented storage unit in Glendale, to a state-wide organization with four community bike shops in three cities and growing!
The SLCBC is the engine that empowers the organization. The SLCBC sells refurbished bicycles as well as used and new components and accessories, the revenue from which is reinvested into ever expanding programming that allows us to give hundreds of bikes to adults and kids in need each year, teach free repair classes, earn-a-bike and mountain bike camps for kids, job training and more! It’s a model we’re proud of and is built with long-term sustainability and mutual benefit in mind—the more people use our shops, the more programming we’re able to offer!
Swing by the shop at 2312 S. West Temple sometime to learn more about what we have to offer or to see how you can get involved with the movement to put as many bikes on the streets of SLC as possible. Happy riding!” Check em’ out: https://bicyclecollective.org/salt-lake-city
