Big Thanks To Smith

“In 1965 Dr. Bob Smith, orthodontist and original ski bum, developed the first sealed thermal lens and breathable vent foam. He hand builds goggles in his garage and sells them out of his van on weekend ski trips in Utah and Colorado.” In 1969 Smith was able to start manufacturing out of Colorado but just a few years later Smith moved production to Ketchum ID, where HQ is still located today. In 2009 they launched the world’s largest eco-friendly sunglass collection, the “protect what we love” ethos of using biobased or recycled materials in all product categories was a major milestone.

Smith has always been one of the leading players in optics and helmets, across a multitude of different action sports. Smith is one of the very few companies that has put Koroyd in their bike helmets as well as the option for Koroyd combined with MIPS (they have these options in snow helmets too). They even recently came out with their “express” helmet for bike commuters that is equipped with MIPS and a built-in light on the back to make you more visible to cars at night/ early morning. We’re over the moon to have the support of such a forward thinking company focused on comfort, innovation, functionality and safety.

Our August Helmet Recipients

“The Salt Lake City shop is the flagship location of the Bicycle Collective. Founded in 2002, the Collective was born when a small group of enthusiastic bicycle users put to the test ideas that appeared to be complementary realities: that bicycles are a sustainable form of urban transportation and people just need a little encouragement to choose to ride; and the fact that there are bicycles sitting unused in garages and backyards throughout the Wasatch front that could be refurbished and put to use by someone in need.

Starting from such a simple idea, the Collective has grown from a small working board of directors in a rented storage unit in Glendale, to a state-wide organization with four community bike shops in three cities and growing!

The SLCBC is the engine that empowers the organization. The SLCBC sells refurbished bicycles as well as used and new components and accessories, the revenue from which is reinvested into ever expanding programming that allows us to give hundreds of bikes to adults and kids in need each year, teach free repair classes, earn-a-bike and mountain bike camps for kids, job training and more! It’s a model we’re proud of and is built with long-term sustainability and mutual benefit in mind—the more people use our shops, the more programming we’re able to offer!

Swing by the shop at 2312 S. West Temple sometime to learn more about what we have to offer or to see how you can get involved with the movement to put as many bikes on the streets of SLC as possible. Happy riding!” Check em’ out: https://bicyclecollective.org/salt-lake-city

Big Thanks To Retrospec

Retrospec graciously donated a generous amount of  helmets and has incredible brand values they strive for:

“Make Nature, second-nature. The outside is for everyone, but not everyone feels comfortable outside. So we set out to make everyone feel at-home in the open-air. We believe that all people regardless of background or experience should enjoy the life-affirming, eye-opening beauty of the outside world”

As most of us know being a novice at something in the outdoor world isn’t always the easiest or most inviting, that’s why Retrospec holds this pledge in place:

“  - Invite everyone, regardless of experience

  • Focus on having fun, not being first

  • Be nice. It’s that simple.

  • Keep spirits high, even if energy is low

  • Leave judgement at the doorstep”

Retrospec is also a big advocate for accessible prices and local sellers! They’re the people’s champ!

Big Thanks To Triple Eight

Triple 8 helmets are among the best, some models equipped with MIPS and they’ve been backed by none other than Tony Hawk for years! They primarily focus on helmets but it’s awesome to see that they also make an assortment of pads and mouthguards for injury prevention.

A deep look into Triple Eight:

“Triple 8 was born on the streets of New York City, so we know what it’s like to ride them. And we know what it takes to conquer them, too.

Back in 1996, we hit the pavement—literally—with our first helmet, and have been developing tough, stylish protective gear for the action sports industry ever since. Our team is continuously dreaming up new products, incorporating new technology, and maintaining our hard earned reputation for skate, bike, snow, water and derby gear of the highest quality and craftsmanship. After all, we’re not only making the products, we’re using them too.

You can be confident that no matter what spills you take, we’re here to help you get right back up. So go ahead, push harder, go faster, fly higher. And know that whatever you ride, Triple Eight has you protected from head to toe.”

Our April Helmet Recipients

We are pleased to donate the Triple 8 helmets to Pushing Ahead, a local UT nonprofit focused on empowerment through skateboarding.

Their Mission:

“Pushing Through Pushing Ahead is a 501(c)(3) non-profit and charity organization dedicated to empowering youth through skateboarding. By providing a nurturing and safe environment, we teach the skills that encourage youth to become confident individuals and build strong communities.”

Through our connections with Salt Lake City’s Youth organizations, we bring skateboarding to groups who might not otherwise have access to it. We provide skateboards and space for youth to learn new skills, express themselves, and meet new friends.”

They’re doing amazing things within our community and making skateboarding accessible to all! Check them out, to see how you can get involved! https://www.pushingahead.org/

We are pleased to donate these Bern Bike Helmets to Young Riders, a Park City, Utah based nonprofit!

A deeper look into Young Riders:

“The Young Riders Youth Cycling program was founded in 1996 as a way to keep kids happy and healthy when the snow melts, works to improve fitness, build friendships, and explore the environment and establish responsibility in youths throughout the Park City area.

Our qualified coaches and instructors make riding safe, fun and adventuresome for riders of any age or ability. On each ride we explore an aspect in each of the following mountain bike realms; healthy lifestyles, technical skills, mechanical skills, responsible riding, way-finding, proper trail etiquette and respect for the environment.

Off the bike, the Young Riders are passionate about your kids and a ‘Greener’ tomorrow. We work closely with other advocacy groups in the area to help promote sustainable programs such as, Share the Road, Safe routes to School, and others!”

Check out Young Riders and all of their initiatives HERE!
